I'm Windveil, a 17 year old girl from the US. I post drawings and different things I like. Take a quick look around and you'll get a pretty good idea of my interests! |

Based on some of the reblogs this picture is getting, it looks like there are people who are blaming ‘capitalism’ for the massive student load debt.
Hate to interject actual reality here, but capitalism doesn’t work that way.
In an actual capitalistic system, no institute of higher learned could charge $100,000 or more for a bachelors degree in:
- psychology
- sociology
- philosophy
- theology
- English Lit
- etc…
Why not? Simply because they aren’t worth that much on the open market!
That is why you have people graduating from college with crushing student debt who can’t pay it off!
Degrees that colleges should be charging those high fees for are the ones where the graduates can afford to pay off their loans. Most engineering degrees for example, or Computer Science, or pharmacological degrees.
The problem with the current system isn’t capitalism, it’s government intervention! Really, pay attention to the label on the weight attached to the kid’s ankle chain.
The federal government gives out guaranteed student loans to just about anybody, regardless of what their major is. The colleges know this, so they will gladly take your money upfront in exchange for an underwater basket weaving degree that cost them less than an engineering degree (all those labs and computers and stuff) and charge you the same amount they are charging a student who is earning a degree that will actually provide them with a decent income once they graduate. They got their money, what do they care? It’s now the graduate’s problem to pay back the loan.
Giving out loans to people who little or no chance of paying them back is a bad idea and much frowned upon in the capitalistic system. It didn’t work out well in the housing market and it’s not working out well in the student loan market either.
Instead of a course in 17th Century lesbian poetry, try one in economics. You might have a better understanding of the system you are blaming.
